I was blessed to be a part of the Sisterhood Of The Traveling Book. The book was about a well known child-trafficker, Georgia Tann who kidnapped children of wayward mothers and then sold them to wealthy families. The story goes back and forth from past to present. The story follows 12 year-old Rill Foss and her siblings through their life living on a river shanty to the halls of the Tennessee Children’s Home Society where her siblings are “sold” off one by one. I was drawn into the book from page one and felt like I was part of the Foss family, felt the water slapping against their shanty boat, heard the birds, felt the breeze.
“Life is not unlike cinema. Each scene has its own music, and the music is created for the scene, woven to it in ways we do not understand. No matter how much we may love the melody of a bygone day or imagine the song of a future one, we must dance within the music of today, or we will always be out of step, stumbling around in something that doesn’t suit the moment.”
-Rill Foss
We have no control of each day, love those that are close to you, love those that may not be family. if you have a sister, you will understand the depth of the relationship each has to one another. The author has a unique gift of writing and pulling the reader in from the beginning. Make sure you have tissues, carve out time to read “Before We Were Yours.” At times heartbreaking, but yet uplifiting. The bonds of family run deep. You will fall in love with Rill and her siblings. You will feel the pain of being separated from family.
Lisa Wingate has become my all time favorite author. I am humbled to have the opportunity to review the book and hoping that their is a follow up to this book.
