Midnight’s Budding Morrow

About The Book

A journey of poignancy and hope . . . difficult to put down. I loved it!”–Jennie Goutet, author of the Clavering Chronicles series

Sarah Drayton is eager to spend a holiday at her best friend’s crumbling Northumberland castle estate. Alas, rather than easy companionship with her dear friend, she finds herself being inveigled into a marriage of convenience with her friend’s rakish brother.

When James Langley returns to his family’s estate, war is raging and he wants only distraction, not serious tethers. But his roguish ways have backed him into a corner, and he has little choice but to obey his father’s shocking decree: marry before returning to war…or else. Suddenly he finds himself wedded to a clever and capable woman he barely knows.

Sarah craves love and a place to belong, neither of which James offered before returning to the battlefront. Now everyone around her thinks she married above her station, and they have no intention of rewarding her for such impertinence. Only when her husband returns from war does she begins to hope they may find real happiness.
When tragedy strikes, this pair must learn to trust God and cling to the belief that even in the darkest depths of night, the morning still holds hope.

MY REVIEW

A beautiful story of how to love unconditionally through redemption and forgiveness. Sarah has the gift of compassion and would do anything to help others. James returns to his family’s estate who is faced with obeying his dad’s decree. Marry before returning to war or else. Sarah was not too happy with the arrangement. My heart went out to Sarah as she wants to find a husband who would share her joy, but James turned his back. The story shows us that God is truly in the middle of everything, that we just need to go to Him daily even when we are struggling. I loved the spiritual messages throughout the book.

The Master Craftsman

The Master Craftsman by Kelli Stuart is the first book that I have read by the author. Karl Faberge was commissioned to make Imperial Easter eggs each year and gift them to the Empress. We follow the life of Karl and modern-day treasure hunters who are on the search for the missing egg.
I enjoyed the story from page one, the suspense and intrigue had me up late into the night reading. I know about Faberge eggs, beauty and all the details that went into making the eggs. I googled the eggs mentioned in the story to see the uniqueness them.

Shadows In The Mind’s Eye

Charlotte Anne Mattas longs to turn back the clock. Before her husband, Sam, went to serve his country in the war, he was the man everyone could rely on–responsible, intelligent, and loving. But the person who’s come back to their family farm is very different from the protector Annie remembers. Sam’s experience in the Pacific theater has left him broken in ways no one can understand–but that everyone is learning to fear.

Tongues start wagging after Sam nearly kills his own brother. Now when he claims to have seen men on the mountain when no one else has seen them, Annie isn’t the only one questioning his sanity and her safety. If there were criminals haunting the hills, there should be evidence beyond his claims. Is he really seeing what he says, or is his war-tortured mind conjuring ghosts?

Annie desperately wants to believe her husband. But between his irrational choices and his nightmares leaking into the daytime, she’s terrified he’s going mad. Can she trust God to heal Sam’s mental wounds–or will sticking by him mean keeping her marriage at the cost of her own life?

My Review

A wonderful debut novel. A story of trust between wounded hearts, rediscovering who each other is, love, pain of PTSD and forgiveness with a hint of danger. Sam, a solider from WWII who is looking forward to getting home to his wife, Annie and their daughter, Rose. When Sam returns home, home he is not sure that he can trust his mind, and his wife is not sure she can trust what he is telling her. Come to find out, no one in Hot Springs is telling the truth about anything. Sam and Annie rely on their faith when faced with challenges. I was pulled in from page one. Highly recommend the book.

The Spark of Love

A wonderful conclusion to the Mesquite Spring series that will leave you not wanting the story to end. I enjoy reading the author’s books. Alexandra is trying to figure out who to trust. A family story of hurts, forgiveness, and new beginnings. I wish that Mesquite Springs was a real town in Texas, as I was reading the story, I could smell the cinnamon rolls that Alexandra bought from the restaurant. I love the subtle messages of faith. I highly recommend the entire series. Amanda Cabot’s stories do not disappoint.

About Amanda

Amanda's Office

I agree with Thomas Jefferson when he said, “I cannot live without books.” Some of my earliest memories are of my parents reading books to me or — in the case of my father — telling stories he made up. And even when they weren’t reading to me, my parents could often be found, book in hand. Is it any wonder I decided to teach myself to read? Once I did learn, it was hard to find me without a book. My husband will tell you that that’s still the case.

At least in my mind, it’s only a small step from being an avid reader to wanting to be an author. From the time I was seven, I was convinced I should be a writer. The type of writing varied with the seasons. For a few months I fancied myself a playwright. Fortunately the teachers in my elementary school indulged me, and my class produced my two plays: “All About Thermometers” and “Hawaii.” Neither, I am happy to report, made its way to Broadway.

There was a brief time when I aspired to be a newspaper reporter, but that was soon eclipsed by my determination to be a novelist. All the while, though, I knew that writing was not the easiest way to earn a living, and so it was always going to be a second career. That’s why I went to college and majored in French, fully intending to teach at the university level. When I graduated, I married my high school sweetheart and took a “temporary” job as a computer programmer. Although it hadn’t been part of my plan, that turned into a permanent career in Information Technology.

Along the way, I’ve had a chance to do a lot of writing, including four technical books and what I describe as “enough technical articles to cure insomnia in a medium-sized city.” (My budgets were also considered to be works of fiction.) Now, though, I’m able to write full time, and for the first time, all I’m writing is fiction.

No doubt about it, I’ve been blessed. I had parents who nurtured my love of reading and have a husband who’s not just my best friend but who’s driven tens of thousands of miles to help me research books and who, after all these years, still hasn’t lost his sense of humor, even when dinner is late because I have “just one more scene” to write.

When people ask why I write, the answer is simple: it’s part of who I am and who I was meant to be. I truly believe this is God’s plan for me, and that’s why it is my fervent prayer that my books will touch my readers’ hearts and strengthen their faith in Him.

My Review

WOW! A wonderful start to a new series by a debut author. The cover is what captured my eye. I loved the inspirational messages that the author wove into the story. Theresa lovers her grandfather dearly, the only family member she has left and is faced with having to pay off his debts before marrying Edward. Edward leaves much to be desired, Theresa is an independent woman who is full of strength and courage.

I did not trust Edward from the get-go. He appears untrustworthy and feels that Theresa is better off without her grandpa. A beautifully written story filled with romance and suspense. I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

A definite page turner. Highly recommended.

Thank you to Kregel Publications and Audra Jennings for the opportunity to read this wonderful book. All opinions are my own.

About the Book

Can this undercover agent save the woman he loves–or is her heart as counterfeit as the money he’s been sent to track down?

After all that Grandfather has sacrificed to raise her, Theresa Plane owes it to him to save the family name–and that means clearing their debt with creditors before she marries Edward Greystone. But when one of the creditors’ threats leads her to stumble across a midnight meeting, she discovers that the money he owes isn’t all Grandfather was hiding. And the secrets he kept have now trapped Theresa in a life-threatening fight for her home–and the truth.

After months of undercover work, Secret Service operative Broderick Cosgrove is finally about to uncover the identity of the leader of a notorious counterfeiting ring. That moment of triumph turns to horror, however, when he finds undeniable proof that his former fiance is connected. Can he really believe the woman he loved is a willing participant? Protecting Theresa and proving her innocence may destroy his career–but that’s better than failing her twice in one lifetime.

They must form a partnership, tentative though it is. But there’s no question they’re both still keeping secrets–and that lack of trust, along with the dangerous criminals out for their blood, threatens their hearts, their faith, and their very survival.

Shackled

About the Book

Book: Shackled

Genre: Religion/Inspirational

Author: Mariam Ibraheem

Sentenced to Death for Her Beliefs

Release date: March 8, 2022

Mariam Ibraheem was finally rising above her difficult childhood and building a new life for herself. Born to a Muslim father and an Ethiopian Orthodox Christian mother, she grew up in poverty in a refugee camp in Sudan. Her father left the family when she was only six, and her mother raised her in the Christian faith. Left without family after the deaths of her beloved mother and sister, she was beginning to move past her grief—earning a medical degree, marrying the man she loved, and having a baby boy.

But one day in late 2013, her world was shattered when an unknown relative on her father’s side reported her to the police. The authorities insisted she was Muslim because of her father’s background. She had broken the law by marrying a Christian man, and she must renounce her Christian beliefs and abandon her marriage and her son. Under intense pressure, Mariam repeatedly refused to deny her faith. She was charged with apostasy and adultery, and she was imprisoned with her nine-month-old, Martin, on Christmas Eve. There, awaiting sentence, she learned she was pregnant with her second child. A few months later, Mariam was sentenced to 100 lashes and death by hanging by a Sharia court.

Shackled is the stunning true story of a courageous young mother who was willing to face death rather than deny her Christian faith. Mariam Ibraheem took a stand on behalf of all people who suffer from religious persecution and all women who are maltreated because of their gender and beliefs.

Follow Mariam’s story from refugee camp to life under Islamic law, through imprisonment and childbirth while shackled, to her remarkable escape from death following an international outcry and advocacy involving diplomats, journalists, religious freedom activists, human rights groups, and even Pope Francis.

My Review

Shackled is a powerful true story of a young mother who was willing to face death rather than deny her faith. Mariam Ibraheem took a stand on behalf of all people who suffer from religious persecution and treated poorly because they are women.

Mariam’s story is a true testament to those who want to know more about what it is like to live a life with Christ in a culture who is opposed to the faith. Would we deny Christ in order to save ourselves? What would we do in a moment of terror? I would have the courage to say that I am a Christian and that I believe in God, what about you? Shackled will open the eyes of the reader to the persecution that Christians face daily in Sudan. The story shows that we can not waver in our faith, even during those hard times. Once I started reading the book, I could not put it down. A true testament to God’s faithfulness even during the dark time. Grab a box of tissues.

I received a copy of the book from Celebrate Lit in exchange for an honest opinion. All opinions are my own.

Prince and The Prodigal

A beautiful story of faith in God, hope, forgiveness, love and tragedy.  I always look forward to reading books by Jill Eileen Smith. The Prince and the Prodigal is based on the second half of Genesis, specifically the life of Jacob’s camp in Hebron, his slavery in Egypt and the move of Judah’s to Canaan. Smith tells the story of Jacob and the love he had for his son, Joseph. I can not imagine the fear of Joseph’s and the grief of Jacob for what his brother did to him I love how Jill recreates the characters and brings them to life, how you can feel as if you know each character intimately. Ms. Smith has become a favorite of mine and always look forward to reading her books

The Girl Who Could Breathe Underwater

The Girl Who Could Breathe Underwater was not the easiest to read and had a hard time getting into the story. The story is not for the faint of heart. I struggled with finishing the book.

Sunrise

WOW! The author is back with an outstanding start to a new series. We were introduced to the triplets in an earlier series. This story is about Dodge mixed in with romance and lots of suspense. Several years ago Echo and Dodge broke off their relationship when he left for the military. Now he is back in Alaska, trying to mend broken hearts and rescuing Echo from dangerous men. I loved the setting and at times felt like I was right along side Echo. Lessons on forgiveness and trusting God right where we are. I highly recommend Sunrise and can’t wait for the next book in the series.

BOOK EXCERPT

Beneath A Star-Lit Sky Excerpt 1

Leading inexperienced people in the wilderness, even by someone with the skills Reese Vega had, was a recipe for disaster. The only person he would do this gig for was his brother. Even then, he was starting to regret it.

Reese stood to the side of the trail, the vanilla scent of ponderosa pines wafting around him, and wished he was hiking alone. The trip had originally been booked by Holcomb Springs Outfitters as a snowshoe tour, but the snow had melted to slushy piles on the trail and only remained in the shadows of the trees. Still, it was a beautiful day, if only he could enjoy it. Alone.

As the group of several girlfriends who had come up for a weekend away passed him, one of the women screamed and jumped, grabbing her friend’s arm. “What was that? I heard something in the bushes. Is it a bear? Or a mountain lion?” She shot Reese a wide-eyed look.

He resisted the urge to roll his eyes. “Probably just a squirrel.”

With all the noise they’d made, most wildlife was long gone. Even the chattering blue jays had left the area.

BOOK EXCERPT #2
The squirrel was probably hoping for a handout. Reese craved the quiet of the outdoors. It soothed him in a way nothing else could, especially after his injury. But this… this was not the kind of outdoors he liked.

But it was a peace offering for his brother who ran Holcomb Springs Outfitters. Maybe it would help mend the fences Reese’s enlisting in the military had broken in his pacifist family. He could only hope. They had wanted him to be someone different than who he was. They hadn’t exactly been in his corner.

He pointed for the group to continue on the trail while he remained behind to check on the stragglers. There were always stragglers. It gave him a chance to grab a minute of quiet. His headache had worsened from the chatter of the women. That and their endless flirting. He’d almost take another tour of duty compared to more tourists.

But due to his traumatic brain injury, that was no longer an option. And he’d told his brother, Raul, that he’d help run his outfitters shop until Raul got back on his feet. Literally. He’d had knee surgery and couldn’t lead the hikes and camping trips.

And being as the outfitter shop was the family’s main source of income, Reese couldn’t say no.

It was only temporary. He’d do his family duty and make an attempt to improve relations. And then he could figure out what he was going to do next. And it wouldn’t be escorting tourists through the wilderness.

Reese stepped toward the guest who had fallen behind. The man wasn’t wearing proper hiking boots. His tennis shoes were soaked from the slush, and he was breathing hard, his face red. Many people had no idea how the seven-thousand-foot altitude could affect them.

“Not too much farther. The lookout point is just ahead. Great view of the lake. It’ll be worth it.” Reese tried to infuse his voice with an enthusiasm he didn’t feel but Raul would expect. Raul was so much better with people than he was.

The man glanced up, nodded, and then went back to staring at the trail. Not enjoying the beauty around him, missing the whole point of a hike in the woods.

Reese shrugged as the man plodded past him. Not his problem. He rubbed his temples, hoping to ease the pain

Beneath A Star-Lit Sky Excerpt 4

Reaching into his pack, he grabbed a bottle of Aleve and popped a couple into his mouth, washing them down with water from his bottle.

A yelp went up from the area of the lookout, and Reese sprinted up the trail. One of the women on the girlfriends’ trip was sitting on her bottom a little way down the slope of the lookout, just before the sharp drop-off.

Her friend rushed over to him. “We were trying to take a selfie with the lake in the background. I think she stepped off, and then she just fell.”

He nodded and knelt beside the woman. Another two steps, and she would have been over the drop-off. People didn’t have common sense. He should have been up here to keep an eye on them. But then what about the straggler? He didn’t know how Raul did it.

“Are you hurt anywhere?” He scanned the woman, looking for any obvious sign of injury.

“My ankle. I think I twisted it when I stepped back and tried to catch my balance.” She glanced up at him and gave him a small smile.

He tugged her jeans up above her ankle.

eneath A Star-Lit Sky Excerpt

At least she had boots on. He palpated the area. “Does that hurt?”

She winced. “A little.”

It wasn’t swollen, but that could change quickly. “What’s your name?”

“Andrea.” She looked up at him and bit her lip.

He should have remembered. Raul would have remembered. He never did live up to his family’s expectations. He reached in his pack for an Ace elastic wrap from the first aid kit. He eased off her boot, wrapped her ankle, then slipped the boot back on with the laces loosened. “That should stabilize it to get you down the hill. Do you think you can put any weight on it?”

“Maybe. If you help me.”

A glance shot among her friends, smiles they didn’t try to hide.

Great. Was this a set up? “Okay, everyone get your final pictures, and we’ll head back.” He slipped his arm under the woman’s shoulders. “On three, we’re going to stand together. Just put your weight on your good foot and lean on me.”

Her “okay” came out breathy.

“One, two, three.” He pushed to his feet and pulled the woman up with him.

She gingerly put weight on her foot then immediately retracted it.

Beneath A Star-Lit Sky Excerpt 7

They pulled into Holcomb Springs Outfitters parking lot. Raul came out in his knee brace to help the guests with their gear and thank them for coming.

Reese closed the van door as the last guest left.

Raul laid a hand on his shoulder. “You should thank the guests and ask them to come back. Let them know we enjoy serving them.”

“Even if we don’t?” Reese brushed past him and carried the gear into the back of the shop. He’d have to repack the first-aid kit. “I don’t lie.” He opened the kit and rummaged through the supplies.

“It’s not lying. It’s good business.”

Reese grunted. He never was going to see eye to eye with his family on things. Important things.

“How’d it go?”

“Fine.” He told Raul about Andrea’s injury. “I’m not convinced it wasn’t an elaborate setup by her and her friends to flirt with me.”

Raul grinned. “It’s all part of the game. I should keep you around, put your face on the brochures and ads. It’d be good for business.”

“I’m only here until you are well enough to lead the tours again.”

The grin disappeared from Raul’s face, and his whole body deflated as if more than his knee was injured.

“I’ll get ‘em.” Caleb bent down to scoop them up and placed them in her hand. “How are you? It’s been, what, eight years?”

Six years, five days, too many hours since we broke up. Faith batted the wispy end of a curl brushing her cheek. “I’m good. Busy.” Faith’s tympani-drum heart punched against her chest.

            “What brings you here?”

“Visiting my best friend Taylor and her hubby.” Awakened embers of hurt fired through her body. “You live around here?”

“Briar Creek, not too far from Taylor and Jarod. I was coming back from the grocery store supercenter when I noticed the geyser.” He headed to the car, “Let’s have a look.”

            “Okay.”

She followed at a distance. Caleb’s spicy cologne teased her nose and tightened her stomach. Arriving at the still-noisy car, steaming water ran from underneath in a river. She noticed a frown pulling on his lips.

“Looks like a water pump or broken hose.”

“Is there a gas station ahead?”

             “In town, twenty miles away.”

Caleb pulled out his cell phone. Traitor, he has two bars.

“Hello. We need a tow,” Caleb closed the hood.

My Review

The Debutante’s Code is a Regency mystery series with a captivating story filled with twists, turns and lots of mysteries. It took me several chapters to get into The Debutante’s Code. I can not even fathom being away from home for seven years to return and face disappoint me to find no parents to welcome me back. No father to share his wisdom, no mother to help Lady Juliette get ready for her debut. Uncle Bertie, a drunkard is there for her. The night of Lady Juliette debut into society there is a theft of artwork which changes her world and what she thought was truth. Pull up a chair and get ready to be pulled into a story of murder and espionage.

I was provided a copy of this novel through the Read with Audra. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

Power of Prayer

OH MY! How do I find the words to review an outstanding, well written book dealing with tough realities of life? “Yet I love how God has taken our broken pieces and bonded them together into his breathtaking mosaic. We are broken together, and that’s something beautiful.” This story touched my heart, a story of second chances, full of mercy, grace, forgiveness, and love. How often do we feel or think that God has not heard our prayers, only to find out that yes, He has answered them?
Broken Together was not an easy read, the story was about a family who was broken by several things including a husband and dad who was in jail. The story did not end there, it followed the family through the ups and downs and eventual release. I love how the author tackled a tough subject filled with hope and grace.
If I could give the book a 10 I would. I highly recommend Broken Together. I received an ARC in exchange for an honest opinion. All opinions are my own.

The Unlikely Yarn Of The Dragon Lady

“The Unlikely Yarn of the Dragon Lady” by Sharon J. Mondragon from Kregel Publishing [Giveaway-USA]

About the book: A knitting group’s change of scenery changes lives in unexpected ways

Margaret, Rose, Jane, and Fran had a good thing going: meet every week in the quiet of their peaceful chapel and knit prayer shawls. No muss, just ministry. That is, until their pastor boots them out of the church in his last-ditch effort to revive the dwindling congregation.

Uptight Margaret isn’t having it. Knitting prayer shawls where people can watch is the most ridiculous idea she’s ever heard of, and she’s heard plenty. Prayer belongs in the church, not out among the heathen masses. How are they supposed to knit holiness into these shawls if they’re constantly distracted by the public? But with no choice, the others embrace the challenge. They pack their knitting bags and drag Margaret–grumbling the whole way–to the mall with them. She can’t wait to prove them all wrong when it fails miserably, and show the pastor that she always knows best.

Without the familiar mold the group has been stuck in, their own losses, pain, and struggles rise to the surface. And the people and situations they encounter every time they try to sit quietly and knit are taking them a lot further out of their comfort zone than they ever imagined. Can they find the courage to tackle the increasing number of knotty issues they learn about in the community–or will the tangle be too much to unravel?

My Review: What an incredible story of a group of ladies who knit prayer shawls, each with a different story. A heartwarming read about friendship, faith and the power of prayer. We get to know each of the ladies of the knitting group, their struggles and challenges, as they knit and pray. As a knitter myself, I also find praying and knitting pure joy. I highly recommend the book.

About the author: Sharon J. Mondragon’s debut is warm and delightful, full of real laughter, grief, and personality. It beautifully illustrates the power of women across generations to reach people for Christ.

Sharon J. Mondragon is not just a nice lady who knits. She’s the author of award-winning fiction that takes you to the place where courage and kindness meet.
Like some of the characters in The Unlikely Yarn of the Dragon Lady, she was once content to live well within her comfort zone. At the age of 19, however, she realized that she would not have much to show for such a life. She accepted the challenge and recklessly prayed for adventure.

The ensuing years as an Army spouse and the mother of five wildly individual children were filled with both thrilling and devastating moments, undergirded by the faithful hand of the God who inspired the prayer. The Army years are over, but the adventure continues in Midlothian, Texas where Sharon lives with her husband, her laptop, and her yarn stash.
